Artificial Intelligence – Promises and Threats

When we hear AI, the first thing that comes to mind is Terminator, well if not smart robots, then possibly flying cars overheads, right? Fortunately, AI is less dramatic and more benign in reality.

According to experts, Artificial General Intelligence in practice is a superconscious or super-intelligent robot, maybe a computer, with the sense to decide the next step. The most common example is right in your hand; yes, we talk about Siri and Cortana.

With a single command, Siri can give you recommendations, what to watch next on Amazon/ Netflix, provide financial advice, Schwab’s Intelligent Portfolio, and a lot more. The human race is moving towards a big trap and invariably needs to be rescued from AI clutches.

The mutual thread between all these activities is replicating what an intelligent human can do. Like this, there are many in-depth facts about promises, threats, and challenges with AI.

So, let’s get started and uncover the promises and threats posed by Artificial Intelligence.

AI: Revolution or Rivalry

Currently, AI is the most rapidly growing sub-field of computer science with a precise aim to develop a set of computational technologies competing with the human mind and psychology.

To some extent, we can say AI will benefit the healthcare industry in climate change predictions or humanitarian crises if used wisely. But, there are many risks and challenges with AI that we need to consider before embracing.

Promises With Artificial Intelligence

Different sectors are now adopting Artificial Intelligence on a global scale like fintech, IT/ITES, transportation, retail services, manufacturing, healthcare, law and order, education, and agriculture, wherein the impact and pace vary a lot.

Few AI-based start-ups are now getting a proper pace and appreciation as being a genuinely innovative experiment, these are-

  • GreyOrange: A software that designs different technology solutions and develops warehouse automation.
  • Butler: A fleet of mobile robots that you can use to move heavy materials in the warehouse more efficiently.
  • Sorter: A fully automated sortation system to sort and divert outbound packets.
  • GreyMatter: A software platform for end-to-end intelligent order fulfillment.

Well, these were some popular AI-based start-ups with high potential. Similarly, we have big names like NetraDyne, a popular Deep Learning and Machine Learning company with primary hands in building computer vision applications. You can use this application for automotive and unmanned aerial systems navigation to avoid collision risks site inspection.

In Healthcare

A medical device technology company named Perfint Healthcare is looking forward to developing diagnostic equipment for the oncology space using advanced AI technology. The company already has developed many effective products like Robio EZ (system with 5 DOF for needle placement during CT Scan), Robio EX (CT & PET-CT guided robotic positioning system), and Maxio (image-guided, stereotactic accessory device to a CT system).

AI’s significant benefits are in healthcare; that is why people ignore AI’s adverse effect on humanity. But, we know how much transparency matters in every industry with all major to minor Threats.

Threats With Artificial Intelligence

There are several novel unresolved vulnerabilities from which AI is suffering. These include-

  • Poisoning Attacks: In this attack, training data is introduced, which hamper the learning system and force the system to make mistakes.
  • Adversarial Examples: By Machine Learning System, the inputs designed are misclassified.
  • The exploitation of Flaws: This happens in the autonomous systems’ goals design.

This all signifies that, apart from competing with the human mind and getting the edge, AI sometimes fails in those situations where a human would never fail.

Moreover, AI can also mislead people when it falls into the wrong hands. For example, people with professional editing skills can create highly realistic videos showing inflammatory comments by a popular influencer or political head to ignite conflict.

These are some common threats with Artificial Intelligence, but AI had to go through some hidden challenges growing to that state.

Challenges With Artificial Intelligence

  • Big Data Scarcity: The ones that get trained on supervised learning with advanced data encrypting are the most powerful AI machines. This supervised learning, or we can say training, requires labeled data. Labeled data are those data that are organized to make it ingestible for machines.
  • Data Localisation: There are some restrictions on data access, especially those that can impact government operations or other operations in a particular region or country.
  • Technical Capacity With Limits:  It’s very tough to deal with AI algorithms as they are very complex and often require n number of calculations.
  • Impact on jobs: The rapid growth in AI continuously moves people out of their roles and sparks concerns about employment. For example, when there were no apps or websites to book train or flight tickets, a group of people was doing this job, but now everything can be done with a simple voice command, a single move in AI removed almost lakhs of jobs, and this a small example there are many more like this.

Wrapping Up

To use AI for the benefit of human race, we need some ethics and laws to regulate AI. After knowing all the hidden facts about AI, you can figure out if AI gets into the wrong hands, which can lead to privacy violations, bias, or malicious use. Thus, establishing confidence in AI’s ability will help use it in only critical areas to avoid all adverse effects, at least for a hundred years from now.

So, we have to understand two things with AI: How to grow and where to grow. Do you agree?
