Here’s everything you must do to build your very own workable FM radio:

Equip yourself with the right components

You aren’t going to get very far with this do-it-yourself endeavor if you don’t equip yourself with the right tools, solutions, and components. Here nine components you’re definitely going to need at your disposal if you want to build an FM radio that actually works:

  1. Magnet wire (if you’re building a small radio, 40 feet of 22-gauge wire will prove sufficient)
  2. Alligator leads that come with clips at each end
  3. A TVS diode that is proven to combat overheating
  4. A telephone handset
  5. Frequency RF mixers that shift signals and actively perform the heterodyning process
  6. A glue stick
  7. Electrical tape
  8. Wire-stripping pliers
  9. A board for mounting your radio

The building process

Now that you have the right components at hand, it’s time for you to embark on the building process. Don’t worry, this need not be a time-consuming endeavor. If you heed the following advice, you can complete this DIY project in as little as one afternoon. Seriously, you’ll be sat listening to your FM radio with a cup of tea in hand before the day is over!

To build your own workable radio, you must:

  1. Wind the magnet wire around the glue stick (keep the wire right and leave six inches on each end)
  2. Tape both ends of the cylinder to ensure that the wire holds firm, and then mount your coil to the board using an electrical wire
  3. Strip the ends of your wire using the pliers
  4. Attach the right side of the wire to your TVS diode and tape them together
  5. Strip two inches from your phone cord and expose the wires within (take your time and retain a steady hand, as this wire is incredibly thin)
  6. Connect one of the telephone wires to the coil and clip an alligator lead to it
  7. Create an antenna by clipping the other alligator lead to one end of your magnet wire
  8. Fit the RF mixer to your antenna
  9. Scrape a thin layer of enamel from the wire that is wrapped around the glue stick

Looking to take on a fresh DIY challenge? If so, you may have just found it! Building your own workable FM radio is a worthy project to undertake, simply because it will push your tech design skills to the limit without demanding too much of your time, effort, or money.

Should you decide to undertake this project, be sure to remember all of the advice and guidance laid out above.
